MATHEMATICS

The MYP Mathematics Program is guided by the three MYP fundamental concepts:  holistic learning, intercultural awareness, and communication.  The mathematical concepts included in this program are: Number Sense; Pattern, Functions, and Algebraic Structures; Data, Statistics, and Probability; and Geometric Concepts.  The mathematics program is taught to support the IB Learner Profile, infusing the MYP fundamental concepts as students recognize and experience the important role that mathematics plays throughout the world.

MYP MIDDLE SCHOOL ALGEBRA I

Duration: Year Long

Course Description: This course includes the critical areas from High School Algebra I and contains content from Mathematics Grade 8.  Algebra 1 demands a faster pace for instruction and learning.  The students will master the following critical areas: (1) quantities and rates, including simple linear expressions and equations; (2) interpreting linear and exponential functions given graphically, numerically, symbolically, and verbally, translate between representations, exploring systems of equations and inequalities; (3) using linear models to describe relationships between quantities and analyze the appropriateness of linear models; (4) the laws of exponents to include rational exponents, creating and solving equations, inequalities, and systems of equations involving quadratic expressions; (5) solving quadratic equations; graphing of quadratic functions; comparing the key characteristics of quadratic functions to those of linear and exponential, specialized functions to include: absolute value, step functions, and piecewise-defined functions.

MYP MATHEMATICS 8

Duration: Year Long

Course Description: The students will master three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
In addition the course infuses the MYP fundamental concepts of holistic learning and intercultural awareness as students recognize and experience the important role that mathematics plays throughout the world.  Our program emphasizes communication of math thinking using a variety of formats. We contribute to the development of the IB Learner Profile by promoting the development of the 21st century learner.
