My name is Melissa Knox and I am currently the French teacher for  French 1A, French I, and French II at Mesa Middle School. I have had the dream of teaching ever since I was in Second grade and my passion for teaching continues to grow.

Teaching Philosophy :
All students are entitled to an education and all children have the ability to learn, grow, and become active participants in today’s society.  It becomes a magical experience to guide children through their journey of self discovery. During this journey, it is important not to teach them what to think, but how to think- I like to think of myself as a facilitator of learning: by this, students become intrigued and naturally want to learn. As a teacher, I find it crucial to promote individualism in the classroom. I like to Encourage inquisitive behavior while finding ways to relate to the students.  I also believe that strong relationships among students and teachers are essential for fostering a safe haven for student growth and student achievement.  

Personality of teacher: 
The most crucial personality attributes that an outstanding teacher must possess are determination, motivation, inspiration, compassion, and responsibility. Furthermore, it is important to be empathetic, encouraging, understanding, and knowledgeable. Teachers must be flexible enough to adjust to individual learning abilities, yet consistent enough to provide a positive learning experience for everyone. Teachers need to embrace student achievement by not teaching them what to think, but how to think- Outstanding teachers should become the facilitator of learning: by this, students become intrigued and naturally want to learn. 
Classroom management 
I use positive reinforcement, encouraging behavior, empathy for struggling students, and consistent classroom procedures: Every year, the students and I create our classroom rules- letting children depict their own rules can result in students taking ownership of their own behavior. The first few days of class is dedicated to getting to know one another as well as understanding the expectations of classroom behavior. Environment has a lot to do with student performance which is why I set up my classroom in pods of four. This encourages ample opportunity for students to communicate and express themselves effectively. I also have strong values in active participation and interactive lesson planning. All students have a weekly participation grade based on participation points. These are earned by responding to questions in class or demonstrating positive behavior while working in groups. This serves as one of the many ways I demonstrate positive reinforcement in my classroom. My students are always actively engaged in the lesson, whether we are playing educational games, or practicing a new concept from TPR activities- my students are always engaged.

Instruction/Assessments :
Differentiation: Every unit is taught using differentiated instruction, followed by differentiated assessments:
Differentiation of instruction: All of my lessons are driven by learning targets and standard based learning. Each unit and lesson is also tailored to individual strengths of my students using many interactive instructions and activities. Let’s take today for example, the students reviewed a set of new vocabulary words by an interactive game of image recognition and word recognition-After successfully practicing the new vocabulary with their groups, I brought them back to whole group discussion and moved on to more complicated material. I taught them how to use those new vocabulary words using complex sentence structures. This was taught by smartboard activities along with authentic auditory examples.  After a quick whole class assessment, we proceeded with partner activities followed by a brief oral activity. To ensure that each individual has understood the new concepts, they were given a short writing assignment that will be due tomorrow. I make every effort to use a variety of teaching methods that will target every learner that walks through my class. 
Differentiation of assessments: In addition to my methods of differentiated instruction, I also find it important to assess students using a variety of differentiated methods as well: these include  interpersonal, oral, presentation, and project based assessments. These assessments give students the ability to demonstrate their understanding of French using  real-world applications. During these assessments, they are encouraged to collaborate with others and expand on their team-building skills. This outcome is a result of the differentiated activities like: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. During each assessment, I am able to track their individual progress while helping individuals who are struggling
